Robert Lewan-GOAL-ski's Bayern Munich defeat underdogs Lyon in thrilling match
Lyon gave the Champions League favourites a strong run for their money. Despite a 33 minute Serge Gnabry brace giving Bayern a comfortable lead, Lyon didn't just lie down and accept a hammering like other teams in the competition. The French side came close multiple times including Karl Toko Ekambi hitting the post, and Memphis Depay shooting wide.
"They were not unbeatable. We played well but we knew we had to be above our usual best to go through and we failed to do that. The first goal hurt us." - Toko Ekambi
Bayern Munich's first goal could not have come at a better time; Toto Ekambi had just hit the bottom right hand side of the post. Moments later, Serge Gnabry cut inside and hit a wonder strike past Anthony Lopes.
Lewandowski close to breaking Ronaldo's Record
Robert Lewandowski completed the thoroughly impressive Bayern Munich performance with a goal in the 88th minute to seal their first place in a Champions League final since 2013. The Polish striker's goal takes him to two goal off Cristiano Ronaldo's Champions League goal scoring record.
This result not only sees Lyon knocked out of this year's Champions League but also next years. Lyon finished 7th in Ligue 1 (outside of the qualification sports) meaning that they would have had to win the competition for them to qualify for next year's competition. It looks like we'll have to be waiting at least another year until we see the giant killers back on the world's biggest stage.
For me, there is only one winner for the man of the match award: Serge Gnabry. With two fast half goals that were crucial in disrupting and destroying Lyon's rhythm, Bayern would have been in a much worse position.
